Novel food processing technologies for retaining nutrition of horticultural food products

AbstractWith growing health awareness among consumers, the food industry faces the challenge of developing processing methods that ensure not only safety but also preservation of essential nutrients and attractive appearances. Due to intense competition in response to the rising market demand, innovative food processing technologies have been developed, particularly for horticultural food products. In this review, we present an overview of four recently established processing technologies, including high‐pressure processing (HPP), pulsed electric fields (PEF), ultrasound‐assisted extraction, and ohmic heating. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in the context of detailed examples, connecting their design principles to real‐life applications. Collectively, these novel food processing technologies highlight the potential of improving food quality, reliability, and functionality in an era of the modern food industry.

Melt processing of graphene-coated polylactide granules for producing biodegradable nanocomposite with higher mechanical strength

ABSTRACT Innovative melt processing technology is necessary for the production of biodegradable polylactide/graphene nanocomposites. In this paper, we present the aqueous spray coating method to prepare graphene-coated polylactide granules for improving the distribution of small graphene contents in polymer matrix during the melt mixing process. Three types of functionalized graphene nanosheets, including graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and poly(ethylene glycol)/RGO (PEG/RGO), were investigated in the formations of graphene coatings on polylactide granules and subsequent melt-processed nanocomposites. It is found that RGO nanosheets have good interfacial compatibility to form better coatings on polylactide granules. Melt processing of graphene-coated granules produced polylactide/graphene nanocomposites with higher mechanical strengths. Nanocomposite materials containing 0.1% RGO showed the best improvements of mechanical and thermal properties. As-prepared nanomaterials and nanocomposites were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), tensile, flexural and impact measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and integrated thermogravimetric analysis (TGA-DTA). In general, the innovative strategy of aqueous spray coating and melt processing is applicable for manufacturing biodegradable PLA/graphene nanocomposites in the sustainable trend of environmentally friendly development.

STUDYING THE APPROACHES OF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES IN FORESIGHT STUDIES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENCE AND GREEN TECHNOLOGIES FOR ADOPTING THEIR EXPERIENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF KAZAKHSTAN

This paper reviews the application of foresight methods in the field of science, especially in the development of green technologies in various European countries, with the aim of identifying the most suitable approaches for future use in Kazakhstan. The analysis shows that green technology forecasting promises to be an effective tool for managing sustainable development. Methods for forecasting green technologies are focused on a systematic approach and integrated solutions, taking into account the environment and social aspects. It is also important to consider both global and local environmental issues to gain a full understanding of future development trends. The article provides a comparison of the Dutch and Danish approaches. Green technology foresight research can play an important role at the national level, especially in integrating sustainability considerations into technology development and innovation processes. They also contribute to the development of more effective and sustainable development strategies for companies and government in Kazakhstan. These studies contribute to increasing environmental awareness and awareness in society regarding the importance of sustainable development. Technology forecasting values the use of Delphi surveys to provide a better understanding of possible future trends. The knowledge gained is the basis for developing strategic plans in the field of green technologies and ensuring sustainable development of the energy sector.

A framework for digitalizing construction businesses: drivers, barriers and outcomes

PurposeIn this paper, a systematic review of 284 articles published between 2015 and 2022 and a full-text thematic analysis of 70 selected articles was conducted to catalog and synthesize factors in a framework. Thematic analysis subsequently revealed 18 selective codes under three groups of drivers, barriers, and outcomes. These three groups were explained by four key aspects including organization, stakeholders, infrastructure, and business environment that set a framework for the digitalization of construction. The study finally concluded digitalization strategies with a focus on support mechanisms, government incentives, regulations, the transition from manual labor to technicians, organizational technology culture, methodology development, and innovation processes. Such strategies provide insight into prioritizing resources towards smooth digital transformation in construction businesses.Design/methodology/approachA two-stage methodology is adopted by undertaking a systematic literature review followed by thematic content analysis. This work concludes with an analysis of remaining research gaps and suggestions for potential future research.FindingsIn this paper, a systematic review of 284 articles published between 2015 and 2022 and a full-text thematic analysis of 70 selected articles was conducted to catalog and synthesize variables in a framework. The elicited framework contributes to the current body of knowledge by offering a unique conceptualization of both driving and adverse aspects for the seamless digital transformation of construction.

Innovation Strategies and Performance of Tea Firms: A Case Study of James Finlay (Kenya) Limited

Purpose: A business must endeavor to achieve a certain level of economic gain and at the same time improve organizational performance to be able to compete with similar players in the industry. An innovative approach is guaranteed to have a positive and huge influence on realization of organizational improvement. An innovation strategy helps the leadership of an organization to come up with systems that can match their competitive needs. This study purposed to investigate the influence that innovation strategies have on the performance of Tea firms in Kenya. The study aimed to assess the following specific research objectives; to determine the influence of process innovation strategies on the performance of James Finlay Kenya Limited; to establish the influence of product innovation strategies on the performance of James Finlay Kenya Limited; to establish the influence of technological innovation strategies on the performance of James Finlay Kenya Limited; to determine the influence of market innovation strategies on the performance of James Finlay Kenya Limited.
 Methodology: The study used descriptive research design in tandem with correlational research design. The management, senior and junior staff of four departments at James Finlay (Kenya) Limited that are a total of 150 staff members formed the population size for this study while the sample size was a total of 109 staff. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire. SPSS software was then used to analyze the data because it was appropriate and easy to use in analyzing the responses submitted by respondents. Descriptive and inferential statistics models were used in the research for data analysis and the findings were presented through tables and figures. 
 Findings: The study ascertained the existence of a positive relationship between innovation strategies and the performance of tea firms in Kenya. Innovation strategies account for 77.4% of the total variance in the tea firms’ performance. Since innovation strategies account for such a huge percentage of the tea firm performance in Kenya, it was recommended that tea firms should utilize Process Innovation, Product Innovation, Technological Innovation, and Market Innovation Strategies in their operations, since this would assure their performance up to 77.4%.
 Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study thus recommended that tea firms should employ these strategies to ensure their overall improved performance.

Globalization, technology and global health

Purpose This study aims to explore whether globalization and technology are harmful to health using a global panel data set of 52 countries over the period 1990–2019. Design/methodology/approach The study focused on four continents: Africa, the Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe. The authors used four advanced econometric methodologies, which include the standard panel fixed effect (FE), Arellano–Bover/Blundell–Bond dynamic panel, Hausman–Taylor specification and two-stage least squares (FE-2SLS)/Lewbel-2SLS approaches. Findings The empirical evidence highlights the significance of globalization and technology in promoting global health. The findings suggest that globalization has various impacts on global health indicators and that technology is useful in tracking, monitoring and promoting global health. In addition, the empirical evidence indicates that a truly health-centred process of globalization and technological innovation can only be realized by ensuring that the interests of countries and vulnerable populations to health risks are adequately considered in international decision-making regarding global economic integration. Originality/value The authors suggest that achieving the aspiration of global health will entail the use of globalization and information technology to extend human activities and provide equal access to global health.

Economic policy uncertainty and the inhibitory effect of firms' green technology innovation

Given the potential unforeseen impacts of environmental regulation changes on the innovative activities of micro agents, it is crucial to examine the effects of economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on business development. Several studies have shown that uncertainty acts as a hindrance and can hinder business innovation. This study utilizes data from 807 listed companies spanning from 2007 to 2019 and employs a double fixed-effects model to investigate the influence of EPU on enterprises' green technology innovation activities. The results reveal that EPU decreased firms' green technology innovation. Moreover, EPU inhibits corporate green technology innovation by increasing corporate financing constraints. Thus, financing constraints mediate between EPU and enterprises' level of green technology innovation, with increased market competition reducing the inhibiting effect of EPU on innovation. Furthermore, EPU decreases green technology innovation more among nonstate-owned and low-tech businesses than state-owned and high-tech businesses. This paper reveals the intrinsic mechanism of EPU on firms' innovation, clarifies the technological innovation process, and provides insights into governmental environmental governance from the perspective of EPU.

Exploring Waste Processing Technology in Animal Husbandry Practices among Millennial Farmers in Sleman District

Integrated sustainable agricultural systems prioritize the return of all generated byproducts to nature, aiming to prevent degradation of vital resources like land and water while minimizing environmental impact. This study delves into the adoption of waste processing technology within the domain of animal husbandry farming among millennial farmers in Sleman district. Utilizing qualitative and literature study methods, the research unveils the current practices of millennial farmers in the area regarding waste management in various animal husbandry categories. The findings indicate a proactive approach among millennial farmers, showcasing the implementation of technology in processing waste from different animal husbandry segments. In the case of large animal husbandry, waste is harnessed for both biogas production and organic fertilizer. Small animal husbandry operations exhibit a practice of repurposing waste into valuable organic fertilizer. Similarly, poultry farming operations in the region demonstrate a commitment to sustainability by converting waste into organic fertilizer. This research sheds light on the positive strides made by millennial farmers in Sleman district towards integrating innovative waste processing technologies into their animal husbandry practices, contributing to both environmental conservation and agricultural sustainability. This conclusion underscores the diversity in the strategies employed for the implementation of animal husbandry waste processing technology, with various approaches taken depending on the type of animal husbandry owned by millennial farmers.

Application of heat pump drying technology to produce dried mango products from Tu Quy mango (Mangifera india L.), Vietnam, on a pilot scale

In this study, the heat pump drying technique was applied to develop the production process of dried mango from Tu Quy mango sources, Ben Tre province, Vietnam. The experiment was performed in three steps. First, mango slices were treated through the blanching process. Samples were pretreated with sizes from 6 to 12 mm at 80–95°C for 3–6 min, and then the mango slices were soaked in a syrup solution concentration range of 25–40°Bx, citric acid of 0.5–2%, and glycerol of 0.1–0.4% at 35–65°C for 90–180 min. Finally, the samples were dried using a pilot-scale heat pump dryer until the moisture content reached 14–16%. The results showed that the blanching and osmosis processes were carried out under optimal conditions to inactivate the Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme, obtain maximum polyphenol compounds, and conform to the product appearance. Additionally, the drying process was carried out at 30°C for 1,080 min with the polyphenol content retaining 11.71 mgGAE/gDW—This signifies a successful endeavor in developing production methodologies and expanding the range of mango-derived products. Employing innovative technological processes enhances both the quantity and quality of the products. Moreover, the manufacturing procedure was executed on a pilot device, streamlining the synchronization of large-scale production processes effortlessly. This advancement not only enhances economic value but also addresses the issue of congestion prevalent in the current state of the mango industry in Vietnam.

The use of citizen information in criminal investigation through a collaborative technological innovation process to counteract theft from persons in Bogotá

Theft from persons is one of the highest impact crimes in Bogotá, with a national share of approximately 38 %. This crime brought to the attention of the authorities is referred to by academics as recorded or reported crime and is used by the police for different purposes, particularly for criminal investigation, but with inefficient results in the identification of perpetrators. Therefore, the type of research is qualitative and has the objective of linking the citizen through a process of collaborative technological innovation, with the purpose of collecting, processing and analysing reported or non-reported information (hidden crime) in a timely, anonymous and efficient manner with disruptive technologies prioritised for the project. The methodology used begins with the discovery stage by identifying key actors and building user stories. Then, in the understanding stage, the value proposition is put forth by means of a hypothesis that is validated in a process of experimentation, and finally, in the build stage, a technology watch analysis is carried out and the proposal for the collaborative system between the citizen and the police with a technological approach is put forward. The results are based on the identification and prioritisation of five technologies, two actors, three variables and application of six low and medium fidelity prototypes, as well as the acceptance of citizens in collecting and sharing timely information at 87 %; that information focuses on video, audio, photos and localisation at 55 %. On the other hand, with the entry into operation of the collaborative system, the researchers indicate that it would optimise investigation by 50 % through the timely identification of the perpetrators. As for the conclusion, the information analysed and obtained from the results allows to reach, in a first phase, validation of the established hypothesis, but at the same time recognising the importance of including methodologies such as System Dynamics that allow for the systemic analysis of the information established by other actors and its impact on the proposed collaborative system.

Impact of policy incentives on technological innovation and diffusion within the new-energy vehicle industry: an ecosystem approach

ABSTRACT In the context of developing emerging industries in China, this study examines the specific effects of policy incentives on new energy vehicle (NEV) technological innovation and constructs a susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) infection model to simulate the diffusion of the NEV technological innovation process. The results highlight four main findings. First, an inverted U-shaped relationship exists between government-supported policies and technological innovation in NEVs. Second, regulatory policies can significantly incentivize the innovative behaviour of NEV enterprises. Third, the effects of policy incentives are more evident in the technological innovation of non-state-owned enterprises than in state-owned enterprises. Fourth, the SEIR infection model shows that policy incentives significantly accelerate the process of utilising, optimising, and replacing technologies in the technology innovation ecosystem, significantly shortening the iterative process of the entire system.

Adoption of processing technologies and innovative food preservation techniques: findings from smallholders in the Lindi Region in Tanzania

Adopting processing technologies and innovative food preservation is crucial for improving the food security and nutritional status of rural populations in Tanzania and other countries in the Global South. However, low adoption rates among smallholders highlight the need for a better understanding of farmers’ decision-making processes. The aim of this study is to examine extrinsic and intrinsic factors influencing smallholders’ decision-making processes in the adoption of innovative food processing and preservation techniques (specifically, pigeon pea flour-based products, threshers, dehullers) in Mitumbati and Mibure in the Lindi Region in Tanzania. Primary data on 555 farm households were collected using a standardized survey. Extrinsic influential factors were analyzed using binary logistic regression analysis. The results on internal decision-making are based on an analysis of barriers and motivations identified by farmers in relation to the uptake of the different innovations. Training and awareness emerged as the most significant factors positively associated with the adoption of all innovative processing and preservation techniques. Moreover, the results show that the primary drivers for smallholders in the study region to adopt innovative technologies were the potential health benefits and time savings they offered. The main challenge they faced was a lack of knowledge about the innovations. The results indicate that disseminating knowledge is crucial for the successful adoption of innovative processing technology in the study region. Improving and expanding training programs to be more inclusive can help to create incentives and overcome barriers, leading to increased adoption.

Targeting in management of sustainable innovative development for industrial enterprises

The problem of reindustrialisation of the country and its transition to the sixth technological mode is of particular relevance for the Russian economy at present. At the same time, for the effective management of reindustrialisation, it is necessary, first of all, to develop a system of target setting for sustainable innovative development of industrial enterprises and production sectors. The aim of the paper is to consider and use a new methodological approach to the formation of such a system of target indicators. It is shown that there is no direct possibility of using for this purpose the theory of endogenous economic growth, the theory of long waves and the concept of technological patterns, the theory of sustainable development of economic systems. The paper presents ways and means of solving three problems arising in the process of effective management of sustainable innovation development of industrial production at the level of industries and enterprises: taking into account the impact on the activation of innovation activity of incoming open “tangible” innovations (patents, licences, software products) and closed innovations in the form of R&D costs; identifying the predominant impact on the resource efficiency of enterprises and industries of certain types of technological innovation-process and product innovations; determining for each type of technological innovation (process and product innovations); determining the impact of the innovation activity of incoming enterprises and industries on the resource efficiency of enterprises and industries.

Transport and technological facilities operated in conditions of fulfilling the versatile tasks of the agro-industrial complex operate in constantly changing road conditions. These factors create problems for the stable operation of all machine systems, which generally requires adjusting the strategy for assessing their residual resource. Designers of transport and technological machines offer new models equipped with security systems, with a given reliability according to the criterion of criticality. Such systems are equipped with protective devices capable of withstanding a limited number of permissible external loads. (Research purpose) The research purpose is substantiating the individualization of the architecture of constructive customization of technological machines operated in the agro-industrial complex at the sites of service organizations that have undergone reengineering of production and technical infrastructure. (Materials and methods) Considered ways to improve agricultural machinery by manufacturers to increase their competitiveness. The problem of replacing machines that have exhausted their service life with new, structurally improved ones was highlighted. In an evidentiary form, it was shown that some of the components have a residual resource and the ability to continue to function effectively. (Results and discussion) It was proposed to use the resource reserves of the machines by justifying the extension of their service life. Recommendations were made for operators on the individualization of the architecture of constructive customization of technological machines operated in the agro-industrial complex. It is proposed to introduce innovative technological processes of machine modernization into the organizational structure of service organizations by reengineering the production and technical infrastructure. It was recommended to compare the time periods of technological progress when assessing the level of technical perfection of machines. As an example, a modal analysis of the undercarriage of technological machines was performed. (Conclusions) The resource-saving effect of the introduction of the service organization’s reengineering methodology with the inclusion of a model of customization of agricultural machinery with the justification of the service life extension period was substantiated.

The Government Policy for the Ukraine’s Pharmaceutical Industry: Economic and Statistical Aspect

Among the priorities for the Ukrainian government during the country’s recovery period after the war should be ensuring national security, establishing an effective healthcare system, creating jobs, achieving stability and economic growth. The development of the pharmaceutical industry plays a crucial role in achieving these goals. The pharmaceutical industry, as revealed by the study, despite increasing production and value added over the years of independence, remains vulnerable and dependent on external resources. The Covid-19 pandemic and the russian military aggression exposed the industry’s unpreparedness for new challenges and threats, casting doubt on the effectiveness of Ukraine’s policy for national pharmaceutical production. The aim of this article is to show initiatives and political decisions made since the early 2000s, as well as economic and statistical assessments of their consequences for the pharmaceutical industry in Ukraine. Study found, that the government’s policy in the process of European integration primarily focused on harmonizing legislative and regulatory frameworks for pharmaceutical activities, rather than on enhancing the domestic manufacturers through a variety of activities: the implementation of a deliberate policy for the technological product and process innovation based on domestic R&D, strengthening competitive advantages for to meet growing domestic needs and increase exports. Lack of policy for increasing the innovative and scientific and technological potential of pharmaceutical industry has led to the growth of imports. It is proven that in 1996, the import of pharmaceutical products per capita in the country was $4,98 and at the end of 2021 (before the start of the war), it was $71.78. The research revealed that Ukrainian pharmaceutical industry, primarily manufactures products for the domestic market and relies largely on imported intermediate goods (as there is no domestic production of fine chemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients and their intermediates); the industry does not generate foreign currency earnings even to cover the expenses for purchasing necessary ingredients in foreign markets. The article substantiates the necessity of a multi-aspect policy. The formulation of such policies should be based on both the results of statistical analysis from official statistics and surveys of professional associations’ members associated with the pharmaceutical industry (developers and manufacturers of biological and chemical substances, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, as well as providers of fillers and packaging materials and equipment for pharmaceutical production). This approach will allow for a comprehensive and adequate assessment of the current state and future prospects of the industry.

Determinant on The Structural Performance of Krisnadwipayana University

The rise of knowledge-based technopreneurship has led to significant changes in work and the demands placed on organizations. Organizations are required to become a repository of innovation and nurture and retain talent resources. The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the impact that technological entrepreneurship, process innovation, and administrative innovation have had on the structural performance of Krisnadwipayana University. Students who made use of various smart government services were selected through a process known as random sampling. A total of 700 respondents were asked to participate in the survey, but only 403 did so, yielding a response rate of 57.57%. After removing missing data, outliers, and questionable replies, 372 respondents were evaluated. SmartPLS 3.0 was used to analyze research models using PLS and SEM-VB. The findings of this study add to what is known about technopreneurship in the academic and public sectors. They look at how innovations in technology, processes, and management affect the academic and administrative success of Krisnadwipayana University students.

Dating and Cultural Processes: Interpretative Potential and Scientificity

Since the beginning of archaeology as a discipline, the control of time, or in other words the placement of specific phenomena in a certain time frame has represented the basis of all research. Despite criticism of the concept of time in archaeology as limitedand linear, it is still prevalent. Absolute dating methods, as they are becoming more precise and available, are being widely used to thepoint that, no matter the subject matter, there are practically no scholarly articles that do not present in detail the results of dating multiplesets of samples. Simultaneously, methods of relative dating are not losing significance, so typology still represent the mainmethodological procedure with which archaeological finds are culturally and chronologically identified. On the other hand, however,scientific questions of the past are becoming more complicated. Numerous processes (which can either be long-lasting or relatively short episodes) are inextricably linked with dating, but it is not always clear how it contributes to the complete understanding of saidprocesses. This is where processes of technological innovation and of cultural transmission, which, in addition to temporally, can be spatially limited, come to light. This is why it is important to question the nearlyuniversally received stance, according to which dating methods have interpretative potential and, relating to that, whether they are always crucial for understanding the mechanisms of cul- tural processes. In other words, do the results of dating represent an illusion of scientificity as a substitute for weakness in interpretation.

PENINGKATAN MOTIVASI DAN HASIL BELAJAR IPA MELALUI PENERAPAN INOVASI PEMBELAJARAN TEKNO OLIM PADA SISWA KELAS VII D SMP NEGERI 2 GIRIMARTO TAHUN PELAJARAN 2022/2023

This classroom action research aims to increase motivation and learning outcomes through the application of innovative Waste Processing Technology (OLIM Techno) in science learning Ecosystem material for class VII D students of SMP Negeri 2 Girimarto, Academic Year 2022/2023. The object of the research is student motivation and learning outcomes in the science subject Ecosystem material. The types of data collected in the research are primary data and secondary data. Primary data sources are teachers and students, including summative test scores and observations during the learning process. Meanwhile, secondary data comes from colleagues who are observers. The results of this research show an increase in student learning outcomes, this can be seen from the percentage of learning completion in the pre-cycle learning which was 40%, in cycle 1 it became 70%, and became 90% in cycle 2. Student learning motivation in pre-cycle learning was relatively low, in cycle 1 to medium, and in cycle 2 high category. By implementing OLIM Techno learning innovations, teachers can change the paradigm from teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning.

This paper explores the crucial role of cryogenic mediums in driving breakthroughs within the biomedical sector. The objective was to investigate, critically discuss, and present the current knowledge and state-of-the-art practices, along with the challenges and perspectives of the most common applications. Through an extensive literature review, this work aims to supplement existing research, offering a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the subject. Biomedical research involving cryogenic mediums is advancing on multiple fronts, including the development of advanced medical technologies, clinical treatments for life-threatening conditions, high-quality biospecimen preservation, and antimicrobial interventions in industrial food processing. These advances open new horizons and present cutting-edge opportunities for research and the medical community. While the current body of evidence showcases the impressive impact of cryogenic mediums, such as nitrogen, helium, argon, and oxygen, on revolutionary developments, reaching definitive conclusions on their efficiency and safety remains challenging due to process complexity and research scarcity with a moderate certainty of evidence. Knowledge gaps further underline the need for additional studies to facilitate cryogenic research in developing innovative technological processes in biomedicine. These advancements have the potential to reshape the modern world and significantly enhance the quality of life for people worldwide.

Human Capital, Business Environment Optimization and Foreign Enterprise Innovation

Under the background that business environment optimization has become a new competitive advantage in cultivating investment and technology introduction, the influence of business environment optimization in developing countries on the innovation willingness of foreign-funded enterprises and the moderating effect of human capital of foreign-funded enterprises are investigated. It is further found that the introduction of foreign enterprises has a significant innovation spillover effect, and the absorption capacity of domestic enterprises has a positive regulatory effect.
